How to test ppc and not worry about duplicate content

Here is a tip. When testing driving your own traffic to your website make a subdirectory and exclude all crawls from any search engines to it using a robots.txt file . Then drive all the traffic you pay for to  the webpages under that subdirectory.

This way you will not screw up the stats your free SEO trafffic and can view the two temperately.

Here is how your robots.txt will look

User-agent: *
Disallow: /test

The “User-agent: *” means this section applies to all robots. The “Disallow: /test” tells the robot that it should not visit any pages on the site under the test directory.

So now your paid traffic and free traffic are seperated to make it easy for you to look at your stats and not worry about any duplicate content on your website.

NOTE: Even though the duplicate content scares are basically a myth (i.e. you can actually use content from other peoples websites without getting hit), you don’t want to have multiple pages on your website that are the same and this will protect your from that.
